CNC MACHINING PRODUCTION
CNC machining is an automated manufacturing process whereby the factory machining tool is operated by pre-programmed software. The acronym CNC comes from the term "computer numerical control." With CNC, programs control complex machining and factory tool movement such as speed, rate of feed and coordination. CNC allows software to carry out repetitive, predictable tasks rather than rely on human operators. The results - consistent and precise parts production. DSI employs 3 axis, 4 axis, and 5 axis CNC milling machines with both vertical and horizontal milling capabilities. ELECTRICAL DISHARGE MACHINING (EDM)
Electrical Discharge Machining, also known as EDM, is a process that does not use mechanical force to remove material from a working piece. The process involves using an electrode to melt or erode the material. The electrode never touches the material. It is in the discharge gap between the electrode and the material that causes the material reduction. This gap can be as small as a human hair and the discharge happens over 100,000 times per second. The process also uses a non-conductive fluid to cool the machined part and remove excess material during the cut. EDM is ideal for tool and mold making and when hard-materials with complex shapes are needed that cannot be accomplished with milling. Surface Grinding is a metal finishing process that uses a rotating abrasive metal-cutting grinder wheel on material to give it a more refined flat-finish look. It is used to remove a layer of oxide or impurities or to give the material a certain type of functional surface. DSI offers customers various machining grinding options including straight line and randon-arc capabilities as well as multiple hand grinding capabilities. The tumbling machine is a containment of various sizes of tumbling media combined within a bowl in which parts are fed. When the containment is continuously rotated, the tumbling media rubs against the component and based on the size and type of media used, removes burrs and excess material. It can also act like a burnishing agent to brighten or polish the component.
Burrs are small, attached imperfections that occur in machining when metal has been changed in some way by a machining process. There are two types of burrs - mechanical burrs and heat generated burrs. No matter how they occur, the fact remains, burrs must be removed. This process is called deburring which can be accomplished with deburring machines. DSI's quality inspection process maintains rigorous control over these pesky imperfections. Anodizing is an electro-chemical process that gives the surface of metals like aluminum, magnesium, and titanium an extremely hard coating called anodic oxide. The composition of this coating is made entirely of aluminum oxide. It cannot peel or chip because it is fully integrated with the metal itself. It is corrosion resistant and extremely strong making aluminum projects durable for many years to come. DSI has been anodizing aluminum for more than 30 years.
SANDING / POWDER COATING / POLISHING
If applicable, we will sand and preparing the surface of your project for powder coating. Powder coating is a metal finishing process that is applied dry. A spray gun is used to apply powder with an electrostatic charge. The part being coated is electrically grounded which attracts the powder and makes the coating possible. After the powder coating is applied, the part is then put into an oven which cures the powder. Powder coating can also be applied to plastics by dipping the part into a fluidized powder. Both applications produce a hard durable high-quality finish that liquid paints cannot offer.
